How to Style a Watch – Tips for Styling Your Watch from Experts
There are many different styles of watches, from the square-faced pocket watch on a link band to the circular pocket watch on a chain. Jewellery can be chameleon-like, blending into an outfit and complementing formal and casual wear. Some bolder, more unique pieces are meant to be the centre of attention and require more finesse in order to “pull it off”. Read on to learn the best tips and tricks for styling your watch.
Tip #1: Choose the right watch size for you
- Band Size. The most beautiful watches can look ridiculous if they don’t fit correctly. No one wants a watch which is too tight or too loose and prevents circulation in the hand. The fundamental rule of watch size is to be able to fit a finger between the watch and your wrist. It may be necessary to adjust the strap or add or remove links until it fits properly.
- The band size is only one factor in determining the right watch size. Choose a watch that has a lug-to-lug measurement (the distance between the ends of the wristwatch closest to your sides, where the band is inserted into the watch) that fits your wrist size. This distance will make the watch appear too big if it is too large. If the distance is too short, your watch may not cover enough space on your wrist and appear too small.
- Watch Face Diameter. The watch’s circumference, which is measured from the left side of the face to the right (excluding the crown), should also be considered. A diameter that is too large will cover half of your wrist or forearm and look very big. A watch with a small diameter will also not cover enough wrist space, making the watch look (and feel) small.
- Case depth. This watch measurement, which is the distance between the top and bottom of the case, is often forgotten. Too deep a watch case can make the watch appear bulky and oversized. Watch depths below 10 mm are suitable for wrists up to 6″. For larger wrists, 7.5″ and above, a deeper watch is possible.
Tip #2: Decide the Occasion
Your watch is much more than a simple timepiece. It’s also a conversation piece, an accessory that blends fashion with function, and a great way to make a fashion statement. When choosing a timepiece, you should consider the occasion. It may be that a chunky sports watch is perfect for hiking but would look odd at a black-tie event. Diamond watches can add instant glamour, but the formality of these watches can be varied. A delicate piece with smaller stones can be worn for a night on the town or at work, while a more extravagant, dazzling watch is better suited to special occasions such as weddings and galas. You can look stylish and put together for any occasion by tailoring your watch.
Choose between different watch styles.
Here are some of the most popular watch styles that you can use, depending on what you want to do:
- Luxury. Luxury watches are a status symbol that will not go unnoticed. They are made with the highest quality materials and have a timeless design.
- Casual. These casual watches are perfect for daily wear. They offer the right balance between style and functionality.
- Dive. These waterproof watches, also known as “divers” watches or “diving watch”, are known for precision and durability. Divers watches, which are designed to withstand deep dive pressure, are loved by actual divers as well as those who enjoy spending time on the sea.
- Pocket. The pocket watch was once a popular fashion accessory. Unlike wristwatches, which are worn around the wrist on a strap, pocket watches are kept in a pocket and often attached to a long chain. Pocket watches have been the most popular portable timekeeping device for centuries. From wealthy fashionistas to railroad workers, they were used by everyone. Pocket watches are the epitome of sophistication and add a touch of vintage elegance.
Choose between different watch bands.
Watch bands are available in a wide variety of styles and colours, from flashy, fancier bands for a special occasion or wedding to rubberized fitness bands for optimal comfort and athletic performance.
Metal:
- Stainless Steel. Stainless Steel watch bands are a versatile, classic option that can easily be transformed from a casual to a more dressy look. They are scratch-resistant, durable, and available in polished or brushed finishes.
- Milanese Mesh. These watch bands are made of a fine, interlocking mesh. They drape elegantly around your wrist and conform to different wrist sizes. They also provide a lightweight, comfortable feel.
- Titanium. Lightweight, strong and corrosion-resistant titanium bands for those who are allergic to nickel.
Leather:
- Full grain leather. Available in a variety of colours and finishes, full-grain is a luxurious option that offers high quality. Watch bands, like other full-grain items, will develop a beautiful finish over time due to exposure to sunlight, skin oils, and normal wear. Patina is the gradual ageing and wearing of the leather. It appears as a subtle shine, along with darkening or caramelizing the leather’s original colour.
- Top grain leather. More affordable than full-grain but still has a nice feel and look. The top grain may appear more uniform since any imperfections are likely to have been buffed out. Patina can occur on top-grain, but it is more common with full-grain.
- Suede. The velvety, soft texture of suede gives any watch a sophisticated touch. Suede is more delicate than some types of leather and requires more care.
Rubber:
- Silicone. Popular for sport watches, silicone bands offer comfort, are water-resistant, and are easy to clean. You can choose from a variety of colours to match your style.
- Fluoroelastomer(FKM). FKM is a more advanced rubber known for its durability and resistance to chemicals and sweat. It is an excellent option for active people who lead tough lifestyles.
Canvas:
- Standard Canvas. The canvas watch band is a good choice for daily wear. It is lightweight and breathable, perfect for hot weather.
- The military style. Military-style straps have become a popular option for those looking to achieve a military look. These straps are usually made of nylon threaded into the watch lugs and folded back to secure them.
Dos and Don’ts when Styling Watches
- Do not wear your watch above the shirt cuff. This style is only appropriate for 1) divers, 2) astronauts, and 3) the late Italian billionaire Gianni Agnelli, who favoured the “over-the-cuff” watch wearing. It’s best to avoid wearing your watch over the cuff of your shirt.
- Do not check the time often.
- Make sure that your watch strap is the right size. This has been mentioned previously, but it’s worth repeating because it’s one of the most crucial aspects of styling a timepiece. Choose a band that is the perfect fit to ensure your comfort and show off your watches to their best advantage.
- Make sure that the watch you choose matches the social occasion. In order to prevent you from wearing a fitness tracker at the swanky charity event next week, we’ll remind you once again: watches should be matched with the occasion. You wouldn’t likely wear your running shoes to your cousin’s wedding. You may want to avoid wearing a rubber fitness tracker watch to similar events.
